I was born in Brighton, so unlike some photographers who have been drawn to it, I’ve always thought life-size Elvis’ were perfectly normal and understood that the different types of people who come to lie on beaches all day or put money in machines, did so because that's what people do.

That said, I’ve come to understand that the sounds, smells and sights of the seaside are actually uniquely commonplace in Britain. I took my first ‘real’ picture on Paignton Pier in 1994 and have always gone back to the coast, often to the same places, uncovering layers of unchanging and uncommon imagery.

This selection represents part of a larger collection of seaside images, the bulk of which were taken between 2013 and 2015 in various UK locations, mainly on England’s southern coasts.
